Project Overview
Founded in 1989 by Renu Modi in New Delhi, Gallery Espace was inspired by her friendship with legendary artist M.F. Husain, who designed its iconic galloping horse logo. The gallery began as a platform for leading artists of the 1980s and 1990s, and today, it collaborates with contemporary creators across diverse art forms, including installations. After 35 years, Gallery Espace sought to preserve the legacy of its logo while adapting it for modern-day usage and building a cohesive communication system for exhibitions and collaborations.
Problem Statement
As the boundaries of art expanded into design and lifestyle, the challenge was to respect the original logo’s heritage while making it adaptable for today’s dynamic context. The task was to unshackle the galloping horse from the “G,” allowing it to stand independently as a mark while reimagining the logotype for modern applications. Additionally, the new identity needed to support seamless communication across mediums while complementing the gallery’s evolving role in the art world.
Our Approach
Reimagining M.F. Husain’s iconic logo required meticulous care to balance its historical essence with contemporary needs. The horse was liberated from the “G” to function independently, while the logotype was hand-tooled, evolving from a font to ensure it aligned with art, design, and lifestyle. This transformation created a versatile identity that remains true to its roots while fitting effortlessly into modern contexts. The palette was kept predominantly black and white, accented with earthy tones, to serve as a neutral yet engaging canvas that amplifies the works of collaborating artists. This minimal yet impactful approach ensures adaptability and sophistication across all communications.
